#Projecthome update: take a step forward, take a step back

The renovation of my house reminds me a bit of the familiar song from the Dutch TV show Verona. It’s probably because I’ve never done this before, but things first look much uglier and more ‘broken’ before they become nice and neat. And that’s quite intense to watch, yet it’s important to remain confident. But the positive thing is that the contractor has actually started!

And I’m so happy about that. Because the kitchen is almost on its way, and I was mainly worried that the floor downstairs wouldn’t be leveled in time and that there would be 2897204 IKEA packages on it…

The contractor and his men are working incredibly hard. I feel humble when I see them work. So much respect for these professionals who not only have a wealth of knowledge but also don’t shy away from heavy packages and difficult jobs. At the same time, I wonder: are there actually construction workers with asthma? It’s incredible how much dust there is in a house during a renovation. Literally just standing inside for a moment can get you covered in dust. That must be incredibly unhealthy, right? Do face masks even keep out the dust that comes in such tiny particles?

Progress

The progress so far is roughly as follows:

  • I’ve laid a floor in the attic so it can at least serve as storage;
  • The solar panels are now properly connected;
  • The huge hole in the living room floor has been repaired;
  • The bathroom furniture has been delivered;
  • The plumbing in the bathroom has been installed (photo 2);
  • The preparations for the kitchen are complete, and now it’s also just been plastered (photo below from some days ago);
  • The awful “laminate ceiling” in the hallway has been removed (photo 3).

In the coming weeks, hopefully we’ll keep making steady progress… The first priority is leveling the floor in the living room. Then the kitchen be stored there, and work can continue on the downstairs and upstairs toilets, as well as the bathroom and the washing machine connection.

I really can’t wait until these basics are sorted out and I can at least move in. Paying for two houses is crazily expensive, but the whole renovation is also a real headache on top of a job and running a business.

Love,

Bridget
